the Guy at Whataburger

Guy

I'm Guy Brown born in Kansas City in nineteen fifty-four. I grew up in Odessa, Texas with three younger brothers, Lee, Jay, and Joel. I received my architectural degree from Texas Tech. Most of my life I've been an architect in Dallas, Texas.  This was fun, rewarding, challenging, time consuming, and at times difficult. I hoped that one day I'd make enough money to afford me creating/building special learning projects for underprivileged children and also be able take time off from work to teach them. Time kept passing.

My Wife and a Promise

My wife Martha and I met at "Dallas Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours" a business networking event.  I started attending Bible study class with her at her church and we fell in love. We married in nineteen ninety. We didn't have kids, so Martha suggested early on that I volunteer teach at the "Dallas Fair Park Arts Enrichment Program," an after-school elementary children's program. The kids and I enjoyed this so much I made a promise to God that one day I would return to the Fair Park area of Dallas and help teach their underprivileged children. I say underprivileged because of the schools and poverty not because of the children who I found to be smart, quick to learn, in love with life, and at young age had no prejudice.

The Holy Ghost and Time Passing

When The Holy Ghost joined me for lunch at Whataburger in September, twenty-nineteen, I was sixty-five, still working, and I was still too busy to find time to keep my promise. Time was catching up with me, and work was becoming more difficult for me to do. So, five years after my visit with The Holy Ghost at the age of seventy I retired. I was ready to keep my promise!

Not Quite Yet

I searched, found, and joined Warren United Methodist Church in South Dallas down the street from Fair Park. I hoped to help with the church's community education and job training program that was just getting started. Something happened and we lost our pastor and program. I wondered if God was quietly saying to me, you're not quite ready to fulfill your promise, yet.

In the year following, my eyes were opened to a more spiritual worship of God and Jesus, and I like it! And, through the church's missions, I've met many poor and homeless personally. They have names, personalities, illnesses, and like to be hugged just like me. I've grown close and consider some good friends. Most have much higher moral character than our country's leaders. During this year I learned not to judge a man or woman by their clothes and appearance. And I now know why Jesus spent so much time with the poor. They help keep you grounded to what's important in life!

Cancer

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at seventy-one. But, thanks to an old friend who told me about the Texas Center for Proton Therapy in Irving I'm healed and still have all my original parts!  And I kept my spirits high thanks to my wife Martha, the many prayers from my friends at Warren UMC and my God. Notice my happy face in this photo taken minutes after one of thirty quick painless proton beam treatments.

Keeping On!

I started working on this website in March twenty twenty-six so that even more people could learn about the Holy Ghost at Whataburger. I used GoDaddy's Basic Website Builder, figuring it out as I went. I've noticed I don't think as fast and I have aches and pains, but most of the time I feal happy, healthy and content.  It's a Holy Ghost thing. Now it's time for me to keep my promise to God to help our underprivileged kids!
